One problem that affects most seniors as they get older is thinning hair. Even seniors who previously had very thick hair can notice that their hair starts thinning. This can be due to many different factors including health issues, medication side effects, hormone balances, and dietary issues. Without knowing the cause of the thinning hair it can be hard to treat, but there are some things that seniors can do to help stop the thinning of their hair like:
Wash It Less
One thing that can help thinning hair is washing it less frequently. Typically seniors don’t need to wash their hair as much as they did when they were younger. With personal care at home, seniors can get the help they need to wash their gently once a week or so and make sure it’s fully rinsed so there’s no soap residue that could damage the scalp. In between washings seniors can use dry shampoo to soak up any sweat or oil that could make their hair look flat or greasy.
Get A Silk Pillowcase
Hair breakage contributes to the thin look of hair, especially for seniors that have very fine hair. It’s often recommended that seniors and everyone with thinning hair or fine hair sleep on a silk pillowcase. The silk will prevent breakage of the hair when seniors are sleeping because the hair will slide right off the silk. Seniors can also try sleeping with a bonnet or nightcap as an alternative to using a silk pillowcase if they would prefer. The protection is the same.
Keep It Short
Thinning hair should be kept short and layered. When the hair gets long it pulls on the hair on the crown by the scalp and that can make thinning or bald spots more noticeable. Seniors who are experiencing thinning hair can make their hair look full again by wearing their hair in lots of short choppy layers. Those layers can disguise thinning spots and stop the pulling that can weight down the hair and make it look lifeless and stringy. Seniors can ask their hairdresser for ideas for short hairstyles that will look good on them and protect their hair from any more thinning or damage.
Eat More Protein
It may not cause regrowth but eating better can make your existing hair healthier and help new hair grow in thick and strong. Seniors often don’t eat enough protein, and protein is the primary component in hair. That’s why people who follow high protein diets typically have very shiny and thick hair. Seniors may not get enough protein because it’s too hard for them to cook meat, or they don’t like some kinds of proteins, or a number of other reasons. But seniors who don’t want to eat meat for whatever reason can get the high amounts of protein they need in protein shakes and bars. Increasing protein in the diet will help make hair healthier.
