Graduation parties, summer barbecues, birthday parties, and other outdoor events are always fun. But if you are going to be having a senior parent attend an outdoor gathering in the spring or summer, there are some things that you should do to make sure that your senior loved one is safe and comfortable throughout the event. Seniors are not able to withstand extremely warm weather as well as younger people can. Consider these tips and how senior home care can help improve outdoor safety for your senior:
Make Sure There Is Shade
Providing shade for a senior loved one is very important at any outdoor event or gathering. Make sure there are several shady spots where seniors can sit comfortably. It’s also a good idea to open up the house so they can go inside where the air conditioning is on to cool if they get overheated. Seniors are very susceptible to heat stroke and heat exhaustion when the temperature starts climbing. Offer them plenty of cold water and a senior home care provider can help them inside if necessary.
Add Some Comfortable Seating
What is considered comfortable or acceptable seating for younger people may not be comfortable for seniors. You should add some heavy duty outdoor furniture like outdoor couches and big oversized comfortable chairs on the patio for your senior parent to sit on. Picnic benches can be difficult and painful for seniors to try and use because of the way that hey would need to move to get in and out of them. And hard plastic chairs are never comfortable for anyone, especially seniors.
Light It Up
Even though it stays light for a lot longer in the spring and summer eventually it will get dark and your guests need to be able to see their way through the weeds, especially your senior parent who may have poor vision at night. Install solar lamps along all pathways and walkways and you may also want to have some LED lighting along garden paths, especially near any steps that your senior loved one needs to navigate. LED lighting will make sure that the outdoor space is light enough even if there hasn’t been enough sun to charge the solar lights. You can also hang festive lights on the patio or deck to increase visibility.
Make Sure Food Is Easily Accessible
When you’re planning an outdoor gathering it’s a good idea to have some food set up inside as well as outside. That way if your senior loved one needs to go inside to cool off or they just don’t want to be out in the sun anymore they will have access to snacks and food. If there is only food outside seniors may not want to go inside even if they feel like they need to for their health because they will want to stay where food is accessible. Have food available inside and out so they can mingle.
