The Best Bath Safety Tips For Seniors

Seniors that are aging at home need to be particularly careful when they’re bathing. A large percentage of the falls that seniors experience at home happen when they are bathing or getting out of the bath or the shower. Even seniors who don’t have any issues with their balance or mobility can slip on a wet floor or misjudge the distance of the step down out of the tub and fall.

It is strongly recommended that seniors aging in place consider personal care at home. Personal care at home gives seniors the extra support they need and lets them maintain their privacy and dignity. Having personal care at home can significantly lower the risk that seniors will fall in the bathroom. Some other things seniors can do to lower their risk of falling in the bathroom are:

Get A Walk In Tub

If your senior parent has a deep tub that they need to step in and out of they should consider replacing that tub with a walk in tub or a stand alone shower. A walk in tub is much easier for seniors to safely step in and out of. Walk in tubs also have safety benches built in so that seniors can sit up tall and don’t need to try and fold themselves down into a tub. Baths can be very relaxing and therapeutic for seniors, but for safety’s sake if your senior parent prefers baths see about getting them a walk in tub instead of a traditional bathtub.

Put No Slip Tiles In The Shower

No slip tiles are designed to keep the shower floor from getting slippery. These tiles comes in many colors and shapes but all of them have slight abrasions on the surface that will prevent slipping. They’re soft on feet but designed to prevent falls. Even a small change to the bathroom like installing non-slip tiles in the shower can lower the risk of your senior loved one falling when they’re in the shower.

Install Grab Bars For Balance

Grab bars are not difficult to install and they really help seniors, especially seniors who have balance issues. With grab bars installed at thoughtful locations throughout the bathroom your senior loved one will be able to shower or bathe safely knowing they can grab one of these bars if they feel dizzy, start to lose their balance, or just need a way to stabilize themselves as they wash.

Install Dispensers For Soap

A great way to make sure that seniors don’t slip on soap in the shower or have trouble gripping slippery bars of soap or bottles of bodywash and shampoo are to install dispensers for those things right in the shower. Your senior parent will be able to get the soap, shampoo, and conditioner they need just by pressing the button. And the product will come out in their hands so they don’t need to try and squeeze or shake a bottle. Dispensers for essentials in the shower are a smart way to make your senior loved one safer in the bathroom.
