No matter what you are, it would help if you were practicing mindfulness. As a senior, life has many thoughts and stressors, and you will need to figure out how to manage stress better. One of the best ways to do that is by practicing mindfulness for a few minutes daily. This is something that even home care assistance can remind you to do each morning or evening.
What is mindfulness? This is the practice of sitting still once a day and letting your thoughts and feelings become acknowledged but not holding on to any of the feelings. You understand they are there, and you are mindful of those feelings, but you let them go as soon as you feel it. Here are a few principles of mindfulness you should know when you start practicing.
No Judgment
The first thing you need to know about mindfulness is that there is no place to judge. You are to acknowledge your feelings but not judge them. You need to let the thoughts come and go without getting stuck on them and judging yourself for those feelings. It can be easy to let judgment in, especially as an older person with tons of experience. Have home care assistance sit down and guide you through a special meditation. Print out something for them to read to help you acknowledge feelings, but let them go instantly.
Be Patient
Having patience does not come any easier with age. In fact, you may struggle to acknowledge and let feelings go. This habit or routine will take time to get rid of, and you need to give yourself grace throughout the process. It is the time to be patient and forgiving with yourself. You may judge your feelings and emotions, but in time, with gentle reminders, you will be able to do this without thinking about it or feeling forced. Try your best and keep trying.
Trust Yourself and Others
If home care assistance guides you through mindfulness, you need to trust them as well as yourself. You need to be comfortable in your environment and trust you’re in a safe place. You need to trust the feelings that come through and trust in yourself to let those feelings go. This process helps you become in tune with your mind, and trusting in your first instinct or intuition will be a crucial part of this process.
Be Present
Many people will tell you not to strive for more. While this sounds bad to elderly people, you want to be in the moment and present. This is acknowledging your feelings in the moment, here and now. This is so hard to do, and oftentimes, when we have thoughts about feelings, we create action plans for the future. But that is not the point. Acknowledge yourself, become in tune with your mind and soul, and don’t strive for more. Stay until you’re ready to move on with your day.
Accept Things
Learning to accept your feelings can seem like something easy to do in theory. But the truth is that accepting what you’re feeling without questioning things is so challenging to do even as an older adult. It’s time to start accepting things for how they are and being okay with what you feel on the inside.
