Spring is here – or almost here, depending on where you live. Winter months can be tough with long nights and cold days so your aging loved one may be ready to get ready for those warmer days and more sunshine that’s just right around the corner.
Preparing for spring can boost spirits and improve moods because it gives hope. Preparing and planning for something good right around the corner is just one way to help someone who has been struggling through those winter months. Here are five spring “chores,” that your loved one can do (alone or with the help of a senior home care provider) that will almost seem fun as she anticipates spring.
Clean and Organize closets
Now is the time to put those woolen sweaters back into storage and bring out the light cotton shirts and sandals. Depending on the size of the closet, your loved one may need a bit of help from her senior home care provider or a family member with moving large storage boxes or heavy items.
This is also a great time for her to look through what she has and what she wants to keep as well as what can be donated or tossed. Might as well make room for some new spring clothes in the near future.
Empty the fridge and cupboards
Spring is a good time to review what your loved one has in storage in her freezer and cupboards. Make sure items aren’t so old they’re expired or will go bad soon. Make space for fresh fruits and vegetables that will be more plentiful this spring and summer.
Prep the Yard
Spring is the time to get the lawn and the gardens ready for their growing season. It can be a lot of work, but with the temperatures still fairly cool, it’s nice to get outside in the fresh air for these chores. Your loved one won’t have to worry about getting overheated. Again, help your loved one out with chores that may be too exhausting by asking a local person to help, or hiring a senior home care professional.
Clean the Car
Those winter roads can wreak havoc on a vehicle. If your loved one has a vehicle, now is a great time to bring it in to get detailed, cleaned up, and ready for those summer evening drives through the country (or at least those short drives down to your local ice cream store).
Spring can also be a good time for maintenance checks on the vehicle to make sure everything is still working its best after working so hard all winter long.
Plan those trips
For many, summer means more freedom and thus the ability to go places, see things and explore. If your planning some type of vacation with your loved one, make sure to nail down those plans this spring before it’s too late and everything is booked up. Your loved one may love to help with picking the destination, where you’ll be staying, and what you’ll be doing.
Spring is right around the corner. Start planning today for some wonderful tomorrows.
