While many things in the world change, one thing your elderly loved one may have fond memories of and can still do is go use her library card. September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, most likely because it’s the month most students go back to school. And while libraries are amazing resources for school children, you might find your elderly loved one can discover many ways to enjoy the library as well.
So, if that old library card is lost or if your loved one hasn’t had one for a while, hop in the car (or have her elder care provider drive her) to the local library to discover some of these fun activities (not all of these are offered at all libraries, but most of them are common to many libraries, big and small).
Books
It goes without saying that your elderly loved one can check out books from the library. And while you probably know they will have lots of books on many of your loved one’s favorite topics, did you know that many libraries also have a section of large print books or audio-tape books so if your senior has trouble reading the fine print, she can find options at the library.
Movies and Shows
Another option many libraries have is the ability to rent DVDs of movies and shows. It’s a great way to watch a movie without having to make a financial purchase of something you’re not sure she’ll like. On the next visit, have your loved one’s elder care provider bring her to the DVD section to see if anything piques her interest.
Town Historical Info
If your aging loved one likes to discover the history of her community, local libraries often preserve old blueprints, road maps, and photos from days gone by. It can be a fun way to travel back in time and remember what the hometown used to be like many years ago.
Classes
Many libraries offer community classes. They are usually educational in some aspect and while many cater to children, there are also often adult-based classes as well. It can be a fun way to get out of the home once a week by having your loved one’s elder care provider bring her to some classes to explore new knowledge.
Social Activities
Libraries are often meeting places for smaller groups so your elderly loved one may find there’s a group that meets that appreciates her love for Shakespeare, or a fun group that likes to play board games together on a Saturday morning. Ask the main desk about groups that meet there and see if there are any your loved one might enjoy visiting.
Holiday decorations
Finally, don’t forget the library over the holidays. Libraries often have a lot of fun decorating for the holidays and will also recommend books to read that pertain to the upcoming holiday or movies to watch. It’s just another fun way to get in the mood for whatever season is upon you.
Libraries are often the heart of the community, so see if your loved one would like to visit hers this month.
