When you have a senior parent that has Alzheimer’s, you are going to be dealing with a lot of stress. In addition to dealing with the stress that comes from trying to physically care for your senior parent you’ll also have the stress of your family, kids, job, and other obligations. An you will have additional stress from your own emotions as you process the changes in your seniors parent. It’s very important for family caregivers who have a parent with Alzheimer’s to recognize that they are under tremendous amounts of stress. There are things that family caregivers can do to cope with all that stress in healthy ways like:

Rely on Support from Alzheimer’s Care

Alzheimer’s care is specialized care designed to fill the unique needs of seniors with Alzheimer’s. You can get Alzheimer’s care for your senior parent so that you can take the time you need for yourself and to give yourself a little physical and emotional breathing room. Alzheimer’s care is available around the clock so that you don’t need to feel like you have to rush home from work so that you can take over caring for senior parent. Whenever you need extra time off or extra support Alzheimer’s care is there.

Start Working Out

When you’re stressed out exercising can seem like the last thing that you want to do. But working out is a very healthy way to manage stress. Physical activity will help you release stress from your body. And regular workouts will kickstart the production of serotonin and other hormones that will help you feel better and lower your stress levels. Endorphins, the feel-good chemicals released by the brain, are a great byproduct of working out. So even if you don’t feel like working out if you do it anyway you will feel better by the time the workout is over.

Make Sleep A Priority

When caregivers have a lot of demands on their time they usually end up taking time away from their sleep to get everything done or to be everything for everyone. If you’re not sleeping at night or if you’re sleeping less than seven hours a night you will burn out quickly. Getting restful healthy sleep is essential for caregivers. Set a bed time for yourself that will allow you to get at least seven hours of sleep then guard that time. About 15 minutes before you want to start getting ready for bed turn off your screens, put your phone on silent except for the care provider and your senior parent, and start to disconnect from the world so that you will be able to sleep.

Stick To A Healthy Diet

When you’re stressed out it’s normal to reach for high fat, high carb, sugar-laden food that will give you some temporary energy and taste good. But that won’t give your body the nutrients it needs to keep doing all the things you’re doing. Make a healthy diet a priority so that you will be able to keep taking care of yourself and your senior parent.
