National Cancer Survivors Day occurs on the first Sunday in June. This year, it falls on June 4th and is designed to help families better understand how to find the support they need during and after a cancer diagnosis. Your dad is recovering after being diagnosed with cancer. How can home care assistance help him with his needs going forward?
Rides For Follow-Up Appointments
Your dad will have several follow-up appointments for a year or so. If he doesn’t want to be alone at these appointments, you’d have to take time off from work. The more appointments he has, the more time off you’re going to use up.
If you don’t get a lot of vacation days or personal time, you might not be able to accompany your dad to every appointment. While there is FMLA available, it’s unpaid and you can’t afford it. You could arrange to have a caregiver take your dad and share information with you.
Meal Preparation
Your dad’s oncologist is likely going to recommend that he focuses on a healthier diet. This is especially true if your dad is overweight or eats a lot of prepared or packaged meals and takeout.
He needs to aim for a diet that focuses on fruits and vegetables of every possible color. Whole grains and low-fat dairy are also part of a healthier diet. Finally, he’ll want to focus on lean proteins and seafood.
Light Housekeeping
It might take time before your dad has the strength and stamina he used to have. He may never have the energy he used to. Make sure he has assistance with his daily and weekly housekeeping chores. This includes having someone available to vacuum his carpets, especially upstairs bedrooms if he’s not in a one-level home.
Light housekeeping chores also include dusting, wiping down counters and stovetops, washing dishes, and sweeping hard floors. Your dad may need someone else to take out the trash and recycling if his mobility or strength is limited.
Once a week, your dad needs his sheets and towels changed. New towels need to be hung and the bed needs to be made up with clean sheets. If this is too difficult for him, he’ll need someone to help out.
Laundry
Depending on where your dad’s laundry room is, he may find it hard to get to the washer and dryer while carrying a heavy basket or hamper. Someone may need to be there on laundry days to help carry heavier items up and down the stairs.
Your dad’s beaten cancer to this point. Make sure his recovery keeps going smoothly and arrange home care assistance. With caregivers helping him keep up with his medications, exercise needs, and home-cooked meals, he’s on a better path to maintaining his health.
