Approximately 20 million older adults have some type of mental health disorder. Depression and anxiety disorders are the most common. How is your mom’s mental health? If it’s worsened since the pandemic, she’s not alone. How do you help her avoid anxiety and depression when you live too far away to involve her in your activities? If you haven’t explored companion care at home services for your mom, it’s time.
She Has Regular Visitors
Loneliness and isolation can impact your mom’s emotional and mental health. If your mom is alone all week, she needs to have visitors. She should have people stopping by regularly throughout the week. Weekend visits are fine, but the rest of the week can pass slowly if no one is stopping by to see how she is.
With companion care at home, your mom has caregivers stopping by every day, every other day, or a couple of times each week. You decide the best schedule for these visits. If it doesn’t seem to be enough, you can increase the visits as needed.
Companion Care at Home Can Help Her Engage in a Favorite Hobby
Your mom loves to work in her gardens, but her garden tools are heavy. She struggles to push a wheelbarrow. She can have her caregiver help her get the tools she needs and set up a garden seat to work from as she weeds or tends to the growing plants.
Is painting a favorite hobby for your mom? Does she need help to squeeze paint out of a tube or clean her brushes? Does she need someone to set up her easel outside? Her caregiver can help her get set up and help her clean up after.
She’s Supported Outside the Home
Exercise is something your mom’s doctor recommends, but she hates going for walks by herself. She’d walk farther if someone is with her. With a caregiver by her side, your mom has someone to walk with and talk to as they walk.
Her caregiver can drive them to a local park to walk on the trails there. Or, they could go to a museum or boardwalk and take a walk on the museum grounds, along a river, lake, or beach, and even have lunch while they’re out. This level of engagement makes your mom happier and that can help ease mental health issues.
Your mom shouldn’t have to feel isolated and lonely. If you can’t visit her as often as she’d like, it’s okay. Have a companion care aide spend time with her. Your mom has someone to talk to, join on walks, and go shopping with. Learn more by calling a companion care at home agency and talking to a specialist in home care.
